I can't believe I'm posting here....

Yeah, I'd try to be neutral on it for now. They are kids, and if the hen has been a problem rouge bird the whole time, very well possible that it got out, something got it, and boy found it. What if the kid was walking with a dead/hurt chicken and wanted to find it help? Maybe he saw it, picked it up, and didn't know what to do with it rather than being malicious, stealing it, and killing it?

This makes me so mad at just the thought that someone might have done that

I hope you tell us what happens!

And about fines, if the boy came onto your property and killed the bird or even just took it then i believe there are heavy fines but if he found it outside, even if he killed it, i believe the fines are minimal. Correct me if i am wrong

Either way, you can't put a price on a life (Even a chicken)

And i believe silkiechicken is right. I can imagine some of the kids at my school doing this in front of their friends though and we live in a generally *good* neighborhood

It is only a chicken. work it out with the boy and his parents.. no need to get the government involved..

If he turns out to be a kid who likes chickens. make his punishment something like scooping the poop out of your coop

who knows, he might turn out to be a big help for you..

Oh yes indeed . BROAD DAYLIGHT !!!!! we had several neighborhood teens stealing our chickens . Fortunately , the neigh in the bak seen who they were and brought me to their home and I informed the parents of what was witness'ed . Naturally , parents said their kids were not in my yard . WRONG !!!!! They had my chickens locked up in a cage in their back yard . Mother said a lil frined had given her boys the chickens ... WRONG !!!! when police were called the oldest admitted to stealing the chickens and he was arrested . We go to court for restitution of damages Jan. 7th. 2009 at 8:30 AM ..

We ended up totally enclosing our runs and coops and adding electric fence around total perimeter of it all ...

WOW - THis is sad. BUt unfortunately true. Sorry for loss and having to deal with this. But please give the child the benefit of the doubt until you get to the bottom of it. Without getting into a moral debate, I think often times kids are a production of their environment.

WHY do parents lie for their children like that?????????????? That just teaches the child to be even more dishonest! UGH!

Some people are dishonest their whole lives, and teach their kids to be too. In their eyes, the only wrong in it is if they are caught.

When I was a kid, I though all adults were smart and honorable. It was a real shock to me when I finally realized that many were not.

I hearya on that one Judy!!!
