I had a similar situation with my dog but he didn't kill any chickens and just kept terrorizing them by banging on the fencing every morning that they came out of their coop into the run. I ended up spraying the dog away stuff that you keep dogs away from plants for about two weeks continually and after that he didn't go near the fence any longer. He still stands far enough away that he barks at them but he doesn't actually get near the fence itself and bother them anymore.

Another thing you might try is to go buy one of those invisible fences and place it underground around the chicken run and coop and any other area that you don't want the dog to go into and then place the collar on the dog and place the white warning flags around the perimeter where the invisible fence is so that the dog knows where not to go and then if he or she does it will get an audible warning from the collar and then will get zapped by the shock collar. It works really good. We have a pond and we put it around it and our Black Lab won't go near the pond area again because she knows that she will be shocked if she does.

Very effective method and its only about $125 at the Home Depot or Wal-Mart or any of the large Pet Supply stores such as Petco or Petsmart.

Hey, thanks everyone. I think I've figured out what happened. The hardware cloth was made of plastic (tough plastic, though) and our dog must have chewed through it. We've already bought four new chicks, and we now have metal wire over the hardware cloth. The chicks survived two hours with the dog loose yesterday, and we are now keeping her on a chain when no one is outside. I'll post pictures of the coop and chicks as soon as possible. (In a new thread!)

That is good to hear that you got some mroe chicks. Sorry to hear that you ended up buying the cheap plastic hardware cloth. That stuff isn't thick enough to keep out anything especially an excited dog that wants to see the chickens.

Good to hear that you got some more metal hardware cloth to go over it and now its one and a half strength instead of just half strength like it was with the plastic hardware cloth.

I just want to add ....
I had a border collie that could chew through Chain link fencing.
I feel if something wants in it will get in! It may not be easy .... But they will ...lol
