You won't believe this.

Yesterday evening, a man drove up in a pickup, threw a Peahen out the window, and drove away really fast.

How could someone do such a thing?

Anyway, my husband was able to get her with a net, and I dusted her with Sevin dust.

She has a limp, but it appears to be to be an old injury. It actually looks as if her leg was cut partway through, and then it healed weird and she is walking partly on the side of her foot.

There is NO guarantee I could catch her again, but is there anything else I should do? I am SO afraid that my birds will catch something from her. I usually would NEVER bring a strange birds on the place without quarentening the birds, but I have no room, even if I could catch her again. My guarentene spot is taken up with my young chicks.

I saw no sign of lice or indeed anything else, no leg scale so far as I can tell.

I am terribly upset about this, but at the same time, I think that maybe St. Francis wants me to take care of this poor bird.

My guys are free range but they stay right here mostly. Do you think there is any chance she will lead everybody away, or will she most likely just stay here?

I am still rather in shock. Am I over reacting, do you think?

THat is terrible, however I wish someone would do that here right now as I am looking for a peahen for my India Blue. I would try to quarantine her just in case. Good luck with her. People are just nuts sometimes, they don't deserve animals!!!

We have had similar things happen here unfortunately. I am in VA and have peas so if you decide you can't keep her I maybe able to come get her - depending on where in WV your are :) She will probably hang around if you feed her and she won't lead your chickens away - even if she leaves they most likely won't follow her. She is more likely to catch something from the chickens than they are from her. Chickens carry "stuff" that doesn't hurt them but can hurt turkeys or peas, so unless she appears ill (sneezing, swollen eyes, etc,) I wouldn't be too concerned. Isolation is a good idea but if she is already out with your birds it probably won't accomplish much.

That's just weird.

I am sort of between Morgantown and Fairmont, near I 68.

We have to go out for a while but everything seems to be ok this morning.

I mean none of my Peafowl have left and she is here but very shy and hiding. I only know she is here because I hear her call and it sounds very near.

I don't think they will catch anything from my chickens, at least I hope not, because my Peas have been around them and they are healthy.

I have been trying to figure out how old Big Bird is. He was named by my kids who are now adults so this gives you an idea! I believe he must be around 20, and his buddy died this past winter, amidst great mourning.
