I am faced with the same problem. I plan to mix my layers (EEs) with my brown egg laying breeder birds (BLRWs) to make the most of my space. That will make collecting the BLRW eggs to sell for hatching a no brainer

I only have two pens, so the second pen is going to be for my Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas. So if you mix your random chickens with purebreds with distinct egg color than you can have three varities in the two pens
