Help! I live in Spain and my chicken hutch has had red mites now for several months. I have used two types of spray for mites and have diatomaceous earth in there and where they dust bath. But they just keep coming back. Several chickens have died over the last few months. None recently as I am giving them lots of vitamins etc but I really need to get rid of the mites!! Any help or suggestions really appreciated. Thanks!

Can you buy Elector PSP?

It is not cheap, but a little goes a long, long way. It will take about 3 days for the mites to die, but once it's out there, it protects for a good long time. You'd want a sprayer so you can hit EVERY SURFACE in your chicken hutch, including under the roost, in between any boards- EVERYWHERE. I don't remember what the bottle said about direct chicken contact - a garden/poultry dust with permethrin is a more immediate help (again, Elector will take 3 days to kill them) on each bird.

You will need to treat your chickens every week several times with something like permethrin, pyrethrum, or sulfur powder to get the mites and then the newly hatched larvae. At the same time the coop will need to be treated, getting apinto any seams, cracks, or crevices where the mites hide at night. Roosts, nests and coop, after removing and burning or bagging old bedding, will need to be treated as well. Permethrin can be sprayed in coops every 30 days, or you can get some product with spinosad A and D, the ingredient in Elector PSP which you may read about here:

Thank you, I will give it a go.

I've done well keeping insects off my hens by throwing a handful of cedar chips under the spruce chips in their nest boxes. I know they say not to use cedar chips but it hasn't seemed to hurt my hens and they're bug free, except when they molt and don't use the nest boxes.
