I have been sooo patient waiting. All I wanted was 2 BR, 2 BO, 2 RIR and 2 EEs. My feedstore told me today they are getting chicks on the 17th and will have EEs, RIR, and California Whites (?). I was so frustrated I drove to the next county and bought 2 Golden Comets. I don't even know what a Golden Comet is? LOL THEN I drove to a little hole in the wall feed store and bought 2 Barred Rocks, and 2 Dark Brahmas (again, no idea). SO.... after cleaning golden pasty butts I now have a tub of chicks... and only 2 of them are from my original list!!! Guess that means I will be getting at least 6 more.

Any age estimates on the BRs and DBs? They have pretty good feathering and teh BRs are huge compared to the little comets.

The big kids - very feathered BRs and mostly feathered DBs

The Golden Comets hide under the bigger BRs... and everyone seems agreeable to it.

Your planned flock was pretty much what I started with. I got the two BO's, two BR's, and two RIR's. Then added in two EE's, a Welsummer, and Black Australorp. It's been a good mix, but I have wanted some Dark Brahmas ever since. I thought strongly about sex-links (that's what your comets are--sometimes they are just called red or black sexlinks, sometimes cinnamon queens, sometimes golden comets, etc.) as well. I think you should have some nice birds, the comets should be egg-laying machines, the BR's should lay well, and the DB's should do a decent job, as well. They should be reasonably friendly, pretty birds for you. Have fun with your girls!

Cute chicks. Gold Comets are golden sex links. They are awesome layers. Females are red and males are almost completely white. They lay a big brown egg and seldom go broody. I think you will be pleased with them. They lay better than a rhode island red in my opinion.

Gold Comets are great egg laying machines. I have one that just turned 1 year old. She lays a huge egg nearly every day. I wanted to get two more but the feed store I was going to get them from kept getting delayed by the hatchery. I finally went to another feed store and picked out two from their gold sex link tub. I have no idea if they are "gold comets" of something else. I picked out two with identical coloring as the chick I bought last year.

Last year and this year I changed my breed list almost daily. I get all of my chicks from feed stores and a local breeder. The feed stores sometimes can't get what they ordered and they sometimes get other breeds that they were not orginally planning on getting. I got 2 Blue Marans unexpectedly last week (

). I was hoping to get 2 California Whites this year. Unfortunately the feed store sold out within a few minutes while I was at work. I decided to get 2 White Leghorns instead. I wanted two white egg layers.

I expect to finish getting this years chicks tomorrow. I will be picking up the last 4 (3 BLRW and 1 Welsummer). I am a little nervous because my wife and daughters want to come with me. I have a feeling that a couple of more chicks could end up in my box. Last weekend they went with me to a feed store. We did pretty good except their was one brooder that had a single Buff Orpington in it. They all looked at me with sad eyes and said we could not leave the single chick in the brooder. It is in our brooder... Then there are a couple of local feed stores that ocassionally bring in rare breeds. They are good about keeping their websites updates

. I can't resist checking their websites daily. One of them has more chicks coming in this afternoon. Unfortunately I have lots of room in my brooder... The issue is coop and run space. Looks like I will be adding onto my run.

ooooh so I am getting the impression I should go back and get more little Golden Comets? They are so sweet! The DBs are pretty sweet, the BRs seem to be the oldest so they are a bit skittish.

I have a brooder light hanging on the rubbermaid box they are in. They stay under the light, but don't lay together / piled up. Are they comfy? I have seen them up and about (the BRs have been "dusting" in the litter), but they sleep under the light.

The guy at the 2nd (or 3rd?) feedstore sold me just regular poultry grit... should I just go ahead and buy some parakeet grit since there are the 2 little babies?

This is a serious issue. I don't have anymore brooder room but I have got to go get more chicks! I guess I will just have to buy another lamp / feeder / water and start a 2nd one...

I wanted a RIR (which I finally got), a Plymouth Rock, but salesperson sold me a Black Australorp, and a brown Leghorn, which is actually a Buff Orpington. Go figure, but some of the sales people are clueless. Oh well, atleast they're healthy and all get long!
