Yup, sex linked chicks are easily IDed at hatch. I've got 25 black sex linked boys who are going to be our trial for caponing.

yup golden comets are sex linked, they are also good sized birds with excellent laying abilities. That gives you a chance do both eggs and meat with the breed. It's a RIR x with a RIW.

Great photos! I particularly like the soda straw grabber. I used forceps with teeth, but they were hit or miss depending on which way the testicle slipped.

I will be butchering mine next month. They have not gotten as big as I had hoped, but they are growing nicely and so far they are not acting rooster-y.

"Wind puffs" are caused when the skin heals faster than the abdominal wall. There are a variety of methods of relieving the pressure.. I usually make a small incision in the skin forward of the original cut making sure to miss the major veins visible in the skin.

I really am all for meat animals etc and I'm a proponent for animal welfare not rights (the difference being animals aren't people but they're entitled to their basic needs and cleanliness); but...I really don't see the need for this. I don't understand it. it looks absolutely painful.
