Buy some marking paint and hit them with a spot before you release them. That way you will know whether or not when they return. I would suspect that it will return.

There is a reason that they are called homing raccoons. Well they really aren't called that but it sounded funny.

I too find it amazing how the human emotions get in the way of common sense. I don't think it anything other than todays enviroment. Boys are taught in school to be like little girls. Can't fight in school, can't defend a girls honor or you're out of school for a length of time. Then send the same boys off to war to kill and wonder why they come home with head problems. Sorry if I offended anyone with that little rant but when anything comes onto your place and kills anything, when it's caught it pays the ultimate price. Attitudes have changed so drastically over the last 50 years. A bully at school can look so innocent when he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

The home range for Raccoon is from 7 acres to 20 square miles and they have been known to go outside their home range if pushed or in dire need of food.

From that you should realize that relocation (illegal in most states and likely requires a permit or has specific requirements even when legal) requires a lot of thought even when legal.

Yes, it's illegal here, but me shooting a gun (which I don't even own), is going to be a lot more dangerous than me giving a raccoon a new zip code. Not worried about that in the least.

I am concerned I didn't take it far enough away. Sigh.

Trapping and shooting will solve this one problem- but there WILL be several more to take its place. The only realistic approach that will be worth your while for the long run is prevention. and because raccoons are so determined and good at finding food the only way is with an electric fence. we have been tormented with predators to the point we were bring chickens and ducks in a spare room at night ... we invested 24$ in the electric fence box ( no noticable increase in energy bill) and about 15$ in wire roll and insulators..you may have even spent that in gas already trying to relocate a raccoon..... Best thing we could have done- one time of a raccoon getting zapped and they realize that land that is humming is not a place to find food. we dont even find raccoon foot prints anywhere on our property anymore (mostly sand)- thats proof to me that its was worth every penny

i know it is sad to shoot them but you need to get rid of them. just 5 miles is not enough distance. he could travel that in a day then she'll have babies and they'll be raised to kill your chickens. if you catch another one SHOOT IT!!!!! i know they look cute and innocent in a trap, but not with one of your chickens in its mouth

another voucher for the fact that you have to take them a long ways, or they will beat you home. i've been through this, and after talking to some coon hunters, i then took them to a swamp 30 miles away. [ on my way to work ]

Maybe the raccoon will find someones chickens to kill where it was released????It won't have to travel back unless it has young kits.If you have chickens your going to have predators trying to eat them.electric fence with the strongest charger you can find works wonders
