They won't poop in it (the heated dog waterer), at least mine don't, as long as I keep a bungee cord above it and located against the wall as shown. And I keep the top of the waterer at the same height as their backs, just like the feeder. I have 12 girls.

I bought one of those lovely flip over and get wet waters too; who ever designed it never used it to be sure!!!! why not put the fill hole in the top? I never open the darn thing, just take the bottom off. Then it takes me about 5min. to get the thing together again and carry it out to the coop, and flip it before I bring it in. I have only had it come apart on me a couple of times but ,Had I known about the cookie tin I would have made one of those and put my slop pan water bucket on the cookie tin. much easier to clean and fill. I like the heated water dish too. How much water does it hold looks like it may hold at least 1 or 2 days worth of water. I have 11 hens and 2 roos. chick fever is hitting hard though I may have to cure it by ordering a few more.

I'm probably going to jinx myself by posting this but I really like the 3 gallon heated hanging waterer. I have two of them. Last year was the first year that I used them and the first couple of times they came apart on me, but once I master the technique of flipping them back over they worked great. I fill the one for my large fowl flock daily and every other day for the bantam flock and haven't had a problem this year. Several days the temperature was below zero and the birds were never without water.

Not sure if this will help...we hung our "night light" low, and about 12", maybe 20" above their waterer in the center of the coop. It heats better, and the water stays warm enough to not freeze most nights, even though the light goes off before 10pm. Some of the nights it was single digits outside, we had a skim of ice, but it was just floating on the top, and a beak could break through it.

We also switched from a metal to plastic waterer, and I'll switch back to metal in the summer to keep the water cool.

I've got 5 of these, the only time they come apart is when i don't check to see if they a completely together, and i use the plug, in 2 years i think they have fallen apart 2-3 times. but I use this kind of water all the time heated or not. the only problem i have is if where you put the plug. if its not in the back my birds knockout it out.
