I decided to let my broody sit on some eggs

Checked today, both eggs definitely developing, clear veins on both, broody being good, I wanted to add more eggs but my slacker chooks have not layed a single egg since I started incubation

It’s day 17 I think, unfortunately the broody has mites, so I’m going to probably hatch the eggs in the incubator after day 18 to make sure they don’t get mites or get pecked by the broody
Both eggs are still looking great though
Candling from day 15

Can you slip some other eggs under her (fake or infertile) and take those two into your incubator and then treat her for mites. And after they hatch give the chicks to her?? (Hopefully by then all the mites are dead and gone?) Otherwise you’ll have to break a broody that has been sitting for quite awhile and that can be difficult!

I will try to give them back to her after they hatch and I’ve treated her
Do you think she’ll take them? How do I best introduce them?
I might move them all into a large box because the mites are probably living in the wood
A have a very large box (fridge or bigger size)

I think she will take them no problem if you do it within 24 hours of hatch! Maybe even 48 hours would be okay. I would slip them under her at night and remove the fake or infertile eggs! The box sounds like a great idea.

If I were you, I would start mite treatment right away, take the eggs, quickly switch out all of her bedding in the nest box and put the new fake eggs under her. Just in case switching the bedding causes her to stop sitting there. Then after the chicks hatch, give them to mom at night. Then give a day or two and move them all into box? I don’t know if this would risk the chicks getting mites. But having your mama raise them will be so much easier than setting up a whole brooder for just the two of them!

You think I should take the eggs today? She has been more reliable than my incubator so I wanted to take them as late as possible, I was planning to take them tomorrow day 18
I don’t have any fake or infertile eggs though, I do have ping pong balls
Yeah I’ll probably wait a day before giving the chicks to her, so the chicks are a little sturdier

Yeah if your incubator is less reliable wait until lock down!! That will be just fine! I can’t wait to see these babies 🥰
