I did a crop surgery on a impacted crop in a hen too, years ago, I took lots of pictures and posted them at the original BYC but they were lost in the big crash there. It's too bad since they were not saved at home anymore so I could not repost it.

This hen got a hold of about a dozen McDonald's game peices for the monopoly game they had years ago. The neighbour's kids used to come over and play with my hens while the mom filled the feeders and collected eggs when I was working dayshifts and they had a bunch with them in thier pockets. Anyway she must have found them interesting enough to eat and that of course that plugged things up. While I did not know that was the problem till I cleaned her out all the usual remidies did not work so I moved on to surgery.

You can buy absorbable suture material from Jeffers Livestock and I used that to close her crop and the skin as well so I did not have to take the sutures out. She recovered fine, spent a couple weeks in the house then back to the coop. Gave her antibiotics and ASA for a few days only.
