I did something awful...

Oh, heck, here I was thinking that the logical thing to do was to beat it with a shoe. No way I'd grab one by the tail, those things can sink teeth to bone, and can certainly twist around and bite the hand that's holding their tail.

We do often grab them by the tail. It usually works quite well. Unless one of the little ****'s decided to run off anyway and leave you with the tail!
I'm having issues with our mice. We have now cornered 3 of them and every time I look at it sitting there, cute as a button with it's shiny little eyes and those cute little hands they've got and they look so scared and I feel so sorry for it and say "aah, shame, it's so CUTE! We can't kill it" and then the mouse gets away.
And DH gets annoyed with me.
Neither is he amused when every time he or my DS spots a mouse I ask if it's got a tail!

mice do not actually drop their tails like lizards will, the tail can easily be broken though, and they will purposely jerk hard enough to break part of the tail... Usually what you are left with is the skin sheath the glove of skin over the bone/meat of the tail. and yes its gross.

I have a couple smart mice that avoid my cats, and I find evidence in the upper cabinets sometimes. but I am often "gifted" with mice from my 4 cats, either from indoors or outdoors...and unfortunately not always are they DEAD when they drop them. UGH. I do have to say I have awesome cats though, had a field rat get in one day, all the cats were inside and asleep with their usual nap time and the back door was cracked open (fall, nice weather no AC on) and the smallest cat a siamese mix happened to hear it or see it, and went after it from under a cabinet. It was amazing to see this 5 pound cat throw the 1-2 lb rat that was about 1/3 of her size around while I grabbed something to catch said evil rat with and in all the ruckus 2 of the other cats come in the room and help corral and hold up the rat. I was able to dispatch the rat with the cats help. Gotta love cats even when they seem to care less about you. lol.
