I did the float test and killed a chick :(

i am lost for words he it's not a float sink test!!!! READ

Well gee thank you for making me feel so smart h4ppy-chris.
I thought I did it right. Here is what it says

1. Sinker= Dud, Never Developed

2. High Floater (like A Fishing Bobber Without Weights) Say 45% Or More Of The Egg Above The Water Line= Dud, No Development Or Fetal Demise, Likely Rupture Of Internal Membranes Causing The Egg To Dehydrate.

3. Low Floater= Viable Egg, Development Full Term

4. Low Floater Rockin And Rollin! This Is The Live Embryo Moving Inside The Egg= Definate Viable Egg!

So it sunk and I tossed it. Am I missing something here? sorry to be so dumb and make you lost for words geesh.

Thanks everyone else for kind words and not making me feel like an idiot!

Harpo,
Thanks for the link. Thats what I did. It specifically says it it sinks its a dud right?
And thats what it did.
Am I missing something here?
Sorry if my ? sounds dumb I am just not getting it.

You followed the directions. You tried. I am sorry that this happened. You are gonna be ok. It is a whole bunch of learning and everyone at one time or other makes mistakes. There is soooo much information out there. Sometimes you don't know what to do. Very respected sites, people, and family offer advice. Some are gonna be wrong, some are old ways, some are new info. that has been recently studied and put out there. Just do your best and that's all anyone can do. Have a Blessed day. Carrie Fletcher

Oh dear, I'm so sorry this happened to you. I know it made you feel awful. I only use the float test with my button quail eggs, and then only a couple days after the chicks were due. I don't necessarily agree with the "if it sinks it's a dud". Later in development, if a chick has quit early, decomposition releases gases which will make the egg float. I usually wait until 2-3 days after the hatch date to do the float test, and I look for the wobble. I place the wobblers on one side of the incubator and the non-wobblers on the other side. That way I know which ones I expect may hatch. A day after the last hatch, I toss the leftovers and always open each egg for education purposes.
