I do believe an egg is coming??

So the barred rock was in the nest box this morning. She was scratching around, beak open, and I could see her back area openining/coding and she seemed to be not comfortable. Is this normal for the first egg? Or will she go through this every time?

On another note..my boy Prince has stuck by her and seems to be standing guard. He seems genuinely concerned and isn't leaving her. Is that normal for a rooster to be? They are 4.5 months old.

Are you sure of age,I would guess their atleast six months old.But,sounds and looks like she is ready to lay.

Positive on age. I have always thought they were on the bigger side for their age..

No, no babies here ever. I bought 4 girls and ended up with 2 boys. I don't want or need any more boys. I kept the boys because I got attached to them. I was never looking for a rooster and odds of more boys is pretty darn good.

Yay! Congrats on the egg! My rooster paces on the ledge in front of our nesting boxes while the girls lay. Sometimes he even sings with them!
