I'm having the same problem here. Chickens won't leave the coop, peacocks have scratched the back of their necks raw, I'm covered in welts from bites - all due to the nasty little swarms of gnats.
DH did just stumble on an excellent idea though. We put a bug zapper in the coop. It is working like a charm and the hill of dead gnats under it are proof.
I had previously put a fan in the coop but the gnats were still so bad I hated going in there to feed and water and gather eggs. I can only imagine how miserable the chickens must have been. Then I discovered if I left the long flourescent light on, the gnats would swarm to that - but it didn't kill them but it kept them off the chickens. Then, brainstorm, we just moved two bug zappers from our other house and were trying to figure out where to put them - "I know, let's try the chicken coop" It's been a lifesaver, literally.
