I haven't seen him fly, I was just thinking that he may have flown to get here. Neither of the boys fly. They all sleep in a pond a few acres over and then come back in the morning. Gretchen flies and has really bad aiming..lol. But the boys waddle over!

I love that song!!

Love the pic of the three of them....duck,duck,goose!

i mentioned the flying thing because i am just curious how the bird got where it was. but glad it stayed safe till it was found.

maybe it is Gretchen's size that makes her aiming off

that is sweet, do you have something to protect your ducks and Gretchen on the pond? foxes love ducks. several people i know tell me they have lost ducks on there pond to foxes. ours are in a pen, we don't have a pond. that is why we have the wading pool.

I would say it's probably a rouen. They look exactly like mallards, except mallards are about half as big. It could just be young, and that's why it's smaller. I think they are about the same size as the khakis. But it would definitely be smaller, a lot smaller, if it were a mallard. An adult mallard weighs about 3 pounds, and an adult rouen weighs up to 12 pounds. The actual mallards would be about the size of a call duck.

They just go to the ponds at night and return in the morning. I tried putting Gretchy in a pen and she was miserable. For the past 4 years she has been free ranging around. I worry about her, but know that she is much more happy out wandering about.

She is just not a flying kind of goose I guess...lol.

DH said Gretch and Willis were teaching Nick how to pick up the left over feed out in the barn. He is getting the hang of it around here.

He does seem tiny next to Willis, there is a big size difference.

What a sweet trio! Love the idea of the "Misfit Farm"!

I think some of the nicest animals are the ones who just "show up." I like to think of those as presents from the Good Lord.

Wait, If thats a rouen, then does that mean my little daddy is as well?

Considering it is bigger than your buff, and from my understanding the buffs get pretty big, I would say it is a rouen. But it is hard to say without seeing it in person. Even seeing it in person it would be difficult. A friend of mine has mallards, and they are the same size as her calls. I have rouens, and they are the same size as my pekins. Pekins are the really big white ducks, just in case you are unfamiliar. A lot of sites I have read say that rouens take 1&1/2 years to reach their full size.

Rouens are about twice as big as mallards. Most sites I read said the rouens are more brightly colored than mallards. But you would probably need to see them together to see the difference.
