I dont know what to do about grit

Yes if they don't have access to yard where they can find their own.

Then they will need grit.
I am confident that if they have access to dirt in their run they have found some grit there. No harm done.

The grit in the yard becomes depleated over time so that is why we buy grit.

my chickens have a dirt floor and they free range so i have never ever given them grit as they can find all they need in nature. the soil here is very rocky though
