Hi everyone,
We just got our baby chicks on Tuesday and little Zazu was showing signs of spraddle leg from the beginning. We wanted to just watch and see what would happen but it just got worse. Today we made a brace with a rubber band and segment of straw. It took us a while get it on her so now she is pretty exhausted from all that struggling and then also trying to walk. She can't walk at all but she can stand a bit. She's just been flopping around. We have her on a heat pad outside of the brooder with a stuffie to keep her company. We don't want to put her back in until she can move around a little better, but she misses her two sisters. To make things even more complicated, we are getting five standard chicks today (the three we have now are silkies), and we don't really have the supplies to make abother brooder.
My questions:
Is this hobble too tight? It seems like her feet are too close together. Here is a picture taken while she was sleeping...
Also, what kind of care does she need while we're treating her? Does she need electrolytes or vitamins?
When will we be able to put her back with the other chicks?
How can we help her to walk as soon as possible?
Thanks in advance for your answers. These are our first chickens and I really want to do everything right.
