I had to do something horrible today. One of the girls was sick or injured I couldnt tell. She wasnt eating or drinking, diarreah, wilted limp comb and skinny as if she hadnt eaten in 3 months. Today all she did was cry out in pain.

Oh my gosh so I put her out of her misery and wrung her neck.

I feel like a monster. I keep thinking I should have just let nature take its course. These hens are my pets and I love them, I dont want to hurt them. I feel terrible.

Want to add: She couldnt even stand up even with my help. I think maybe she would have died with out my help.

I've had to cull a couple of chicks I've hatched and hated it. But when we take on the responsibility of their care, we have to do all of it. It stinks but both you and I cared for them enough to do a very hard thing.

You could have let nature take it's course, but you opted to not have her suffer any longer because you care. That's not a monster in my book. Big hugs!

Though it was very hard for you, it sounds like it was the right thing to do under the circumstances. Sometimes, when there is no hope and the creature is suffering, taking a life is an act of kindness. You did what you had to do out of love, because you didn't want her to suffer and that does not make you a bad person and it definitely does not not make you a murderer. You sound like a good, caring chicken owner, who wants to do the best for your chickens, even if it's something difficult, like taking their lives. So please don't feel bad! I think most, if not all of us here would do the same if we need to and many of us who had chickens for awhile did. It's not an easy thing to do, I know. But sometimes it really is the best and kindest thing you can do. Big

It's not murder, honey. It's mercy and responsible animal ownership. I wish more folks could do as you did and not let their animal suffer for days longer than necessary. Bless you.

It is called, the "coup de grace" Soldiers used to do it on the battle field, ending the suffering. It is certainly not murder, a totally different concept.

Murder is to benefit the murderer. To be noble, to be responsible, to stop the sufferning of another, when death is coming to slow, is a coup de grace.... really to be able to do that, is a good thing, an honorable thing, a courageous and a brave thing.

Personally, I don't think people should have pets unless they have the maturity to make these decisions.

I agree with all of the above. With that said, you need to figure out what happened to her. It may spread to the rest of your flock.
"wasnt eating or drinking, diarreah, wilted limp comb and skinny as if she hadnt eaten in 3 months. Today all she did was cry out in pain"
The symptoms you listed are common to many viruses & illnesses chickens can get. How old was she?
Was she new? Any other symptoms? bloody poop? pooping at all?

its something we all have to d:hmmne of my favorite hens had internal egg laying in march.she was so full of fluid she was having a hard time breathing and she could barely walk.I did all I could for her and than the next day she was even worse.i could not stand to see her suffer.DH husband put her out of her misery. So don't beat your self up.that was the humane thing

to do.Hugs to you.

I don't believe in culling for deformities- we wouldn't do that to deformed children. But when she is as sick, weak and miserable as she sounded, you did the right thing. Sorry for your loss. :hugs
