Hi

I received this morning 6 Orpington eggs for incubation - 2 were cracked unfortunately.....but the other 4 are ok.....however they are very round and I am not sure which end is the big air cell end and which is the pointy one.....i tried candling them and couldn't see any air cell at either end......I am letting them rest before putting them in the incy but i have had to lie them on their sides and I don't want to put them upsidedown accidentally.

Thoughts/ideas? WWYD?

many thanks

I think i would do what you are doing. hopefully someone who knows better than i do will respond. I'm interested in the answer to this one.

Hmm. I don't know, but I think I'd probably just pick an end. If they're that similar, it probably won't matter. Considering that chicks can sometimes hatch out of the wrong end successfully, I'm sure they would have a good chance hatching out at either end of a nearly round egg. Certainly a better chance than trying to hatch out in the middle, which is what they'd have to do if the air cell settles in the middle section.

Why can't you see the air cell? Have you used a bright light in a really really dark room? That seems odd to me... and of course if you can get a look at that air cell, that will solve your problem altogether. Hmm. Let us know what comes of it all.

When I've got eggs like that I let them incubate on their sides for a few days until the air cell has grown enough it's easier to tell and then I put them in the turner.

Thanks for the replies all.

I am slightly confused....in my incy (rcom mini 3)....which I successfully used to hatch 3 out of 3 eggs last week (hatched last thursday) the eggs are always on their sides......I was only thinking that if the air cells were wobbly they would go back to the right end after being through the postal system. They are on their sides at the moment and then will go into the incy on their sides aswell......I didn't realise that incubating them on their sides was a problem/bad thing to do.......please expand if you can :-)

many thanks

Just ignore me, please!!!!

I think the other posters are much more on target here--I was just guessing. You're right--lots of folks incubate on their sides, with the large end more or less pointing upward, but basically on their sides. So my talk was just meaningless dribble. I'm pretty used to it.

That's a very good idea!...on there sides til the air cell forms. That's why I love BYC..so many smart people to us each other.
