i dont know who to believe

where i live, i called the county agricultural agency, they told me really , nothing is written about keeping chickens in our city, so i called code enforcement for the city, they said no chickens allowed, so i asked if it was written, i got the run around, after a few mins.,they said yes its written, then they told me,..."some" people have had chickens for yrs, in the city, so they can have them, like grandfathered in , but no "new" chickens allowed

I asked for the written ordinance stating I couldn't own chickens as pets. The secretary proceeded to tell my DH that the ordinance was out on loan because someone else was looking into chickens...

You can't loan a law, lady.

Then I had to pay for a copy of it from the OTHER secretary who actually found it. There's nothing stating I can't own them in town... but then we bought a few acres, so now I can have as many as I want.

Well I googled around and couldn't find it but did find some interesting things: Your local cooperative extension is having a backyard chickens series. You might already know that, but I see a contact #. They might be able to help you out and point you in the right direction.

Get a copy of the code so you can read it yourself and see where it does or doesn't say chickens are allowed.

so some people can have them and some can't. that sounds like discrimination to me. Are any of the people that have them related to the selectmen , sounds like nepotism.
just a couple of words that make you sound like your going to get a lawyer.
I love using them.

Ooh I know. I was pretty po'd. It took TWO WEEKS to get that copy. And all it was was an ordinance pertaining to which pets were allowed, dog biting, leash laws and noise ordinances. Nothing about having chickens in town at all.

But like I said, we're in the boonies now. I've got acres and acres here and I'll have as many chickens as I want... since I don't need a building permit (the shed was already here).

Sounds like here. I asked at City Hall if there was someone who could help me understand ordinances about keeping chickens in town, like, three or so hens in a backyard coop. The receptionist said, "Oh, no, I don't think that's allowed." I mean, she was polite, so I'm not trying to slam her or anything, but I want exactly asking if she thought it was allowed, I was asking about help with getting a handle on the ordinances. As is, I've only found one ordinance, and it's kinda vague. First it says you need a permit (to have livestock) unless you're in compliance with the zoning laws, and then it goes on to say how enclosures must be kept clean, and how permits last a year at a time and can be revoked at any time. Well, that didn't really sound like no, they're definitely not allowed, but it didn't exactly sound like a promise of a yes, either. I just need to get deeper without all this half blind no stuff. I'd also asked at the feed store where we were admiring some pullets, when a young guy asked if we needed any help. He said, "I'm not sure, let me ask someone," (good, someone who at least acknowledged they weren't sure add TRIED to find a better source), and then paged someone on his walkie talkie. I heard a woman say back, "No, no, don't think in town, I don't think so". I don't know how much she was guessing there, and how much she knew from things she knew. Not that it's her job to be able to cite laws or anything, I was just hoping that the place that sells chickens to the area may have some sturdy data on the issue from being close to experience. Again, not that I direct them to be able to recite ordinances our anything; they're a store, but a city office. I want to try asking around some more, I just need to figure out how without getting the same brisk nos. Sigh. I'm really shy, so it's gonna be hard to put my foot down and say, "No, show me that in print, please."
