I know chicks are so adoreable to stay away from, but my friend who has a been raising chicks for most of her life said it would be better to just let them rest in your hand in the cage. So if they do jump they will only fall about 3-5 inches at most. Also it also takes them away from their precious heat when you hold them out of the cage which is not to good for them. Dont be to scared to hold them out side the cage, but only 1-2 times a day atmost. Make sure their wings are down with your hand, and with your other hand hold the body. Silkies are extremely fragile so wait maybe 1 1/2 weeks before holding them outside the cage.
so sorry, its very hard to lose an animal anytime, but when when youve spent some emotional energy on them, and with worrying, checking & crying it makes it harder, I know.
I am sorry for your loss. But thankful that you shared your story. I didn't even think about them jumping or wiggling loose when we hold them and the risk to them. Hopefully this will help prevent others from going through the same situation.
I'm sorry to hear that Lola didn't make it. I have to admit I have dropped a wiggly chick, too. But I guess orps are not as delicate as silkies, and I was just lucky.
