I drove over 50 miles to get eggs because I didn’t want them to be shipped. Well today is day 8 and out of 12 silkie eggs 12 of them have veins. Can you believe that. It’s a lot better then shipping. To bad we all couldn’t drive to get our eggs.

That is so true!

Glad they are all developing, happy hatching!

Well I'm glad your luck was better than mine was. We drove 600 miles roundtrip to pick up some rare rose comb Rhode Island White eggs, and out of 5 DOZEN eggs, I got 6 birds.

That's about what I drive to college everyday.

It's 30miles to the nearest store so sure I'd drive that far for eggs easy. Unfortunately I've only gotten that lucky once and out of 2 dozen eggs only 2 didn't hatch.

I'm so sorry. BUT you did get 6 so that's a start. I thought I had RIW's but they ended up being White Rocks. But that's Ebay for you.

At the risk of jacking this thread, I would like to ask a question:

With the process of hatching eggs in an incubator being so difficult and with widely varying success rates, why do people do it that way? Is it because you can hatch eggs at any time of the year, versus only late spring through early fall, with a broody hen? Are there other advantages to using an incubator, versus the "natural" way?

If this is a dumb question, I apologize...new to this chicken thing and never really considered hatching eggs, YET.

in my country there are no fall, winter, summer and spring, we only meet with mr.dry and mr.wet over here, that's why i need someone sending me snow to be tested by me.

still in my country, it's easy so much easy to have a broody hen, cause the hen can sitting on it anytime in 365 days whenever she want to.
the advantage for me to use incubator is:
1. learning how the egg "develop" how the embryo "work inside egg" how can an oval shaped "calcium made thing" can "turn" into an animal that can move, fly and setting.
2. know how "difficult and complicated" to become a daddy for "children"

3. learning how to make incubator and how to make those thing that can be eaten become alive and can "fly"
4. know how many "sacrifice" that has been made by those hen to hatch their "kids", although when the kids become older and if it's a roost it would "married" with his mother.

(warning:in many human culture it's STRONGLY PROHIBITED)
5. know how it's hard to hatch a chick using incubator (of course only in my "power failure country") since you all just need to set thermostat and leave it "auto working" and only need to turn it and keep it's humidity. cause i live in 4-8 hours power failure country it's not that easy to hatch a chick inside incubator. trust me it'sssssssssssssssss hardddddddddd here.

that's all i think, if there are another and i "catch think" then i'll just add it.

I'am done messing around with shipped eggs.HORRIBLE fertility rates with them and a huge waste of money. It is much, much, better to get them local or have your own stock.
