You might consider fire bricks instead of cement blocks or lining the cement blocks with fire bricks. Cement blocks will disintegrate when used as fire bricks.

I'm more thinking the buildup of ash when you've had multiple fires. Eventually, you have to clean it out, like a fireplace, don't you?

Yes they are good at undermining. I have some warped landscape timbers that I'm cutting to 32" to make 32x32 frames to fill with dirt and fireplace ashes and some from my charcoal grill.I bet it is! Might be nice to have a spot just for them that they would enjoy going to, rather than digging out joist supports. LOL
