Yep this does happen not only to goats but other critters too...I being a goat breeder and raiser the momma goat needs at least 7 to 10 days of Pennicillia g depending on her size its 1 cc per 10 lbs.so if she weights 40 lbs its 4 cc's...I lost 2 does this year and am bottle feeding a baby that did make it...I know its hard but just like they say "what doesnt kill us only makes us STRONGER" Hope your friend gets better and enjoys her new baby and if by chance momma is swollen she can apply Preparation H to her hinney to make the swelling better. also some Warm molasses water sure wont hurt...I do this for all my girls after kidding.

Tell your friend to try not to think about the one goat she lost, but instead the TWO she SAVED. Had she not done what she did she would have lost all of them. The baby that died just wasn't intended to live and no vet, or anything else could have saved it.

I am so sorry to hear about your friends' experience. As the other posters' mentioned she did the best thing possible, saved those who were able to be saved.

Thanks again y'all. I'll be sure to give her a hug from all of you. Chatychick, I'll tell her about putting that Preperation H and mollases water on the goat's hinney if it gets swollen. Y'all are such a big help.

The warm molasses water is for her the momma to have energy ...she will drink it up...mine do also she needs to worm her doe too as the hormonal difference will bring on a big worm load. I would worm her and 10 days later do it again. With her going into the doe she need the antibiotics also. This will stop any infection since she didnt glove up and it is for the best. I have learned the hard way about this. The Prep H makes the does feel better too and makes it so much easier for the to pee. I have a doe that is driving me crazy as she is due soon, so I know how it can stress out people but she did really well to be a beginner...yep she needs just to love the 2 she saved and not worry about what she couldnt do. Great save on her part and a good learning tool.
