i have been trying, rather miserably to catch this HUGE wild buck mouse that lives in the metal shed, not to kill him, no, he's too beautious for that!

I want him for his reproductive stuff!, I am planning to breed feeder mice for the chickens/ducks whatever, but since the three girls I got the other day are just too cute, I wanted a wild buck to breed with them, I've had wild mouse hybrids before, and right from the minute they could see they were spazzy as all get out.

I've seen him three times, about an inch and a half from head to tail, FAT, got battle scars all up and down his ears and tail.

and he's SMART, he's gotta be to have lived long enough to get that big.

our first incounter was in the shed in an old pig feed bag, he took one look at me, climbed the bag a split, I think we were both surprised,

2nd encounter was in the livetrap I borrowed, he was cought but no sooner did I pick the trap up, he slipped from the corner of the door, and ran off.
third encounter was tonight, in the same pig feed bag, we gave each other the eye, literally, and as I was thinking about how to catch him, he walked here and there in the feed bag, even sat to nonchalantly give himself a thorough washing...then it happened

the bag opening slipped out of my hand and fell back down, he was off like a rocket

so I've been outsmarted again!

but the hunter never gives up his prey!...right?

I want him before the cats finally do him in!

lmao...I used to live trap mice around my chicken pen to feed my snake.

Is your trap the kind that you wind up & get several catches out of, or the one catch kind?

You could also get him used to going into a garbage can he can get out of by setting it next to something slightly higher than the rim of the can. Make it so that he has plently of stuff to land on, eat, & leave. He'll return again & again. Then, remove the stuff in the can so that it's empty except for food. Once he jumps in, he won't be able to make the jump back out.

Good luck on your hunting!

I could totally send you my office rats if that does not work out. I work next to a river, across from a grain mill. My rats are so big & brave that I really have a ball bat next to my desk. And I HAVE had to use it.

it's plastic tube type thingon a pivet type thing, with a plug at the back you pull out and put peanut butter or whatever on, and put it back, then the door is on legs that stands it, when the mouse entered the trap, the father it goes back, it's wieght pushes the bottom on the trap down, and the raised front closes the door.

the smaller mice have seemed to find a way around that too, they eat the peanut butter and leave without springing the trap LOL

I'll have to try the bucket idea if this doesn't work

Your local pest control place will also have different types of live traps. That's where I got mine.

You wind it up, and have the bait inside. The touch place is so sensitive it almost takes nothing to set it off. A scoop comes down faster than the blink of an eye, and sweeps them into a holding chamber. You can place food & water in the chamber if you like. It trips several times before it had to be wound again.

ETA: If you use the bucket method...a 5 gallon will not do it. Try a 55 gallon or larger trash can. Rats can jump HIGH!

I maintain a small mouse ranch to make food for my pet snakes. Sometimes the snakes will kill a mouse but then decide not to eat it. I throw those dead mice into the meatbird pen and watch the cockerels play tug-o-war and keep away with them. Dinner and a show!

This kinda reminds me of the rat/cat farm scam. The story being that there is a rat/cat farm you can either start up as business, or work on. The overhead is zero, the profit: 100%.

The rats mate & make new rats. (did you know that only 2 rats, given an unlimited supply of food & 1 acre of land will produce a million rats in a years time???)
Anyway...you breed rats. Seperately, you breed cats the same way....
The cats are then skinned for their fur to sell, and the dead cats are then fed to the rats. The fat rats, are fed to the cats who are later skinned.

It's a freaky scam. It's not real...but I have seen it come up more than once.

Sorry about the side note...you just have to take a trip with me now & then.

Just show him pictures of the mousie ladies you plan on introducing him to... if he is anything like most guys, he will jump into the trap!
