I placed a branch in the brooder for the young'ins to learn to roost. 22 little chicks run up to it about 6 inches away in a line. Stare at it, peep ... peep. RUN AWAY ... slowly come back ... 6 inches away ... peep ... peep. RUN AWAY ...

over and over again

I can totally see that scenario!

My very first chicks were absolutely terrified of the mad, marauding, killer peas I put in a small dish for them the first time.

All it takes is one brave chick to best the Stick Monster and your chicks will be balancing on that roost like nuthin' was ever scary about it.
