Hi All! I've been lurking for a few months and finally decided that my obsession with chickens probably won't pass, so I should go ahead and just embrace it and make an account here. A few months ago my daughter BEGGED to adopt two of the chicks they were hatching in her science class. I finally relented (we had chickens when I was growing up) and she signed up to bring home 2 baby chicks. I was afraid that if one didn't make it we'd have a lone, depressed baby, so I ordered a random "adopt me" pack from a hatchery, making us proud parents of 8 lovable fluff balls. I've been doing my best to figure out their breeds and sex, but I know I'm eventually probably going to have to post for all your help! Right now our favorite is what appears to be a Plymouth Barred Rock hen, she's the sweetest, friendliest and most curious of the birds. Runner up goes to "Pippin", the quirky little White Sultan (hopefully one that lays eggs, not one that crows!)

It's just my daughter and I at home (I have an older daughter in college). We're outnumbered by pets, in addition to the chicks we have 8 cats and a dog. We have a house on a half acre outside of Fort Worth, and are so excited to start using our yard for something useful. We're originally from Wyoming, but have moved quite a bit to keep up with an oil and gas career, but after being in TX for almost 9 years it looks like we're going to be here for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, I'm excited to be part of the community! I already owe you all a huge "THANKS" for all the great advice I've read on the forums. Look forward to learning more!

:frowHi there and welcome to BYC.
You can participate as much or little as you choose to.
There’s no pressure here.

If you post pictures of your flock (easiest to do from a smart phone IMHO) I’m sure lots of peeps will chime in.
This community has so much knowledge to share.

You’re a good parent to say yes to the chickens. They are a great family project and I feel that having pets is a good way for children to learn the responsibilities and rewards of caring for other living creatures. :hugs
