I found a baby mouse.

This is VERY true actually. Public institution are breathed down the back with regulations... BUT especially private companies, are not subject to the same rules. They get to chose if they want to join or not!

I hate to not get right in the middle of another argument thread...

I realize this is a stale thread...but I just rescued a mouse identical to the one which started this thread. One of my cats carried it in to the yard, and his little squeaks got my attention right away. He doesn't appear to be hurt, so I'm giving him the grass/rice/oats/water in a box treatment until morning. He's young, but has fur, etc. I wish I knew where kitty found him, because I'd put him right back there with his mates.

Yes, rodents carry fleas which carry disease. I still can't stand it when the cats bring me live things. If they want to kill to eat, great, just don't do it around me. I don't mind cleaning up/burying rat heads and mouse guts, but I WILL rescue the terrified little things. I usually set them loose under the blackberry bushes (a la Brer Rabbit) do they can lose themselves in the "briar patch". If they're going to die, I'd like it to be a quick kill. If the cat is going to just play with his food, I take it away so the critter can die in peace or at least be eaten by something more businesslike, like a hawk.

Cheers,

Neb

Well, if you dont mind stuff like that and would just let your cat kill him then why dont you just put the thing back outside.

The point is that I don't let my cats kill anything if I can help it. If I see them eating something they've killed, it's a done deal. If they're playing with something still alive, I take it away. And, yes, I will be putting him "back outside" tomorrow since he seems just fine.

One thing I do to make sure my cat kills and eats her kills... or at least doesn't bring them to me alive, is to not feed her at night. Usually she will kill and leave the body in trade for a hand full of food in the morning... she's not starving because I've seen her swallow/chew mice up and eat them early in the morning or in the evening even when there is still cat food in the dish! She's a real barn cat though.
