I found a coop I like!

I purchased the savannah 6x6 shed from home depot with delivery for 846.00 that we are converting to a coop. I actually painted it the weekend. We put thrim on and now we will do the roof.

It is very sturdy and I will try to post pictures to show you all. I looked at that coop too from the Amish. I thought it was a bit pricy. 750.00 plus 450.00 to ship it! I said no way. I love my little shed for six hens.

I think the only way to go is to try to build my own. I'll let you know how it goes...if it goes.

We are building a board and batton coop for our chickies. We jsut got the last of the material. Now we need to build it. Ours will be somewhat very similar to that design but ours will just have a slanted flat roof. Ours will be 8x8 square and 8' high at one end and 6' at the other to allow the snow and rain to come off (we are on PA).

I built an 8'X12' coop, cedar shake siding with a shed roof for about $700. The door, 3 windows, and metal roofing I got for free.

I think it would be fun to work with cedar shakes . . . well, cedar shingles would be easier, I guess.

The purchase of a shed for around $800 seems reasonable to me. I'm sure costs have come on this forum many times but I built a ~ 8' x 8' coop (one half fully-insulated) 10 years ago for nearly $400, and then put a $100 roof over it!

BTW - I looked at the cost of cedar shingles & shakes at HD the other day ! Maybe it would be reasonable to make our own by cutting up old fence boards . . . ?

I got my cedar shingles/shakes (i don't know the difference) at a " bargain barn" for 1/2 price.

Used to be . . . shakes were split with a froe, which is just a big knife that you beat on with a mallet. A wood shingle is cut with a saw. So a shingle is nice and smooth and a shake is a little rough.

The shake may not even have any taper to it. The taper allows them fit together more easily and without it, the wall or roof would really be rough looking. However . . . . if we could appreciate that appearance - old cedar fence boards cut to 24" and used as shakes might be very useful for siding. Just thinkin' out loud
