I have 5 hens. yesterday i found a lash egg. I suspect 1 of 2 hens. one is very pale in the face, almost grey the other has a bit of a messy butt. not sure which one laid the lash egg. It is extremely cold here, below zero, and has been for a few weeks making things very difficult. how do I figure out which one is sick? should the sick hen be isolated from other hens? I am reading so much conflicting info on lash eggs that I am confused and looking for sound advice.

Hi Trina, try going to this site- thefrugalchicken dot com forward slash lash hyphen eggs hyphen salpingitis. There's a whole discussion there on it, plus posts of people who have dealt with this. (I just googled lash eggs and it came up - save you some typing!) I used to have a chicken that was an internal layer, she did lay some of these (I didnt know that's what it's called), but she eventually had to be put down due to fluid accumulation in abdomen. Have you palpated the one that looks sick? She did not really show signs of sickness like you are describing. When they get a messy butt I take a pair of scissors and trim some of the feathers around the vent. The other one may have some other problems going on, and the cold doesn't help for sure.
