I found a rooster in bad shape in the side of the road! Graphic images. Please help!

You have gotten good advise so far.

I would trim back some of the feathers to keep them out of the wound. From the pictures it looks mostly like the skin and some tissue has been damaged and chewed up. I don’t see major muscle damage which is good.

Vetericyn and sugar are good. I used VCO and sugar too. Honey or medi-honey can be used. Due to location you may want to consider a slightly dryer wound care. Mostly so you don’t have sticky goo dripping off the chicken.

Keep us posted on what you try and how she’s doing. Pictures are always helpful.

Hi there. Thank you for rescuing this poor hen. I think it was probably a predator attack. As has already been mentioned, warmth and hydration will be key right now. Keep the wound clean, and watch for infection. I personally would use triple antibiotic ointment and be prepared to administer antibiotics should infection set in, which was also already mentioned. We have seen some remarkable recoveries, but it’s wise to be aware of the possibility she might not pull through. (I do realize I’m repeating a lot of what has already been said, but stating again, as it’s all good advice.) If you are willing to go the extra mile for her, it just may pay off. Is she eating, drinking, and pooping on her own? Is she vocalizing at all? Time will tell if there is permanent spine or leg damage. I can’t tell from the photo whether there is any organ damage, but I don’t think so. If she can’t get around, make sure water and feed are within reach. If she’s pooping, try to keep her back side clean. Depending on how far down her sides the injuries go, and if she can’t stand, she may be comfortable in a sling so she can poop, stay upright, and stay clean. (see attached photo)
Also, depending on where you live and whether flies are a problem, keep an eye out for fly strike (maggots in the wound). Keeping her indoors should be enough to prevent this, but since you are brand new to chickens, thought I’d warn you about it. Please keep us posted. We are here for moral support as well as trying to offer technical support. You came to the right place! :)

I have nothing more to add, you've been given very good advice by all.
Glad you're able to rescue HER :hugs Please keep us updated, we're all pulling for you both :fl
I agree with the others. Also Gatorade, PowerAde, Pedialyte and I'm sure there are many others that works good if she will drink it. I have also used Save-A-Chick. How is she eating? I have also given them some Poly-Vi-Sol without Iron in a dropper and I have mixed some with the feed for a vitamin boost. I would also put some triple antibiotic ointment on the wound. This is only what I would do and I'm sure others will have better ideas. I had a boy that absolutely could not walk but after some time he progressed until he was as good as the other birds but then he started attacking me so I sold him. It was either sell him or eat him but I have several birds in my freezer.
