So my husband was correcting our Scooby Roo and he was holding him down and I thought that it would be a good opportunity to check for mites. Sure enough, I found some. We have the dust and will be treating them Saturday. I couldn't find mite eggs or any big quantity so hopefully we found them early. Chickens are acting fine and we were going to dust them as a preventative measure. If he uses the panty house method, does he have to hold them upside down? I don't want them to thrash too much plus he will be doing this by himself.
Any thoughts?

Lice are found on the vent area, they are yellow and need to be powdered. If its red mites them you have a problem , on e you find them you tend to have an infestation of them. You will need to spray out the house after cleaning it with super strong disenfectant . Strong ripcord and diesel can work well but it stinks and after a few years they will get used to it. Once it's clean and dry paint de powder in all of the cracks and corners.

What I do is get an old tied-off sock and fill it with powder (tie it off after putting powder in I mean).

Turn chicken on back on ground or table. Hold onto feet. Dust under wings, vent area, tummy. Turn chicken over. Dust back and everywhere except face. Wear a mask and take shower afterward- wash clothes- wear long sleeves too.

I use poultry dust.

Retreat in 7 days for mites and 7/14 days for lice to break the life cycle. Treat coop as well, tossing all nest box material and bedding each time. I switched to sand now so I just shake the dust into the sand. You aren't supposed to use it in the nest boxes though.

The best time to do this is at sunrise or sunset, while they are still on the roost. Pluck them off the roost one by one and do the dusting, then if evening turn on a light for them to find their way back to the roost. If morning just let them out when done with each chicken. That is what I do, anyway.

Mites and lice can kill chickens so a no-bug policy is vital.

They sell a permethrin liquid too that you can dilute per label directions if you don't like dust, and spray chickens and coop.

Wow, thanks for the info guys! I already bought the dust. And I'm pretty sure it's the red mites. I pulled a random clump of feathers back and saw 1 or 2 run away real quick. I have only checked my rooster but I'm sure the other 4 hens have them too. One of my hens are broody and I've read that they are especially at risk. So we will definitely get this done first thing Saturday morning. We have only had chickens for a few months and we only have the 5. We found a round worm about 3 weeks ago so they have been wormed. No other problems besides the mite thing and I know that can be a serious issue if not dealt with quickly.
Thanks for all the help! :)

Time to reworm them to break the life cycle of the worms IMO. I do mine 10 days apart.

You are welcome!
