I let my four 14 week olds out to free range last night for a couple hours. This is the second time I have done so. I did go out a little later than usual to close them up, about 9:00 p.m. I wanted to check out our new solar spot light so I waited until dark. Much to my dismay, there were only three little ones in the coop

. So for the next hour and a half, until the batteries ran out in the flashlight, I looked and looked and looked... I called her name... I shook the can with the scratch in it. Nothing. I couldn't find Caramel. My DH insisted that I come inside, that she was gone and that she was only a chicken!!!!!

With a heavy heart I went in to bed, worried and prayed that Caramel would be okay.
First thing this morning, 5:00 am, I jumped out of bed to go looking for Caramel in the day light. Again, I got my can of scratch, shook it and called her name, no reply..

.. I was sure that she was gone for good. Then all of a sudden, I hear the flutter of wings and out of a tree comes Caramel.

I think I will go out before dark from now on.

Yay for Carmel! Last week I had the same thing happen with my new Bantam Faverolle hen. She went missing and I found her in the morning! It was so hard to sleep thinking about her being lost ... I was up at 5 a.m. also! lol

Glad she's okay.

We had a pullet that went "missing". I counted them in the coop 4 times, my DH counted them, we looked all over their run, and in case of an escapee, we looked around our property. No chicken. Close door and go to bed. So I lay awake most of the night and think how am I supposed to explain this to my 5 year old. (it was his chicken) In the morning I go up, open the door, and all of them come out, including the missing one. Turns out she found a "hiding spot" in the coop. She got herself up on the roost, then used it to get to the 2X4 framing above the window. She's a RIR, so she just blended right in.
