I found this trying to get in my Serama coop

a good copperhead is a dead one, i like snakes, and we need them, but not in my coop

I'm currently treating my dog for a copperhead bite he got last Wednesday in my backyard. I didn't know what it was at first other then a swollen painful leg. The vet shaved it and we could see no entry wounds but he had a temp of 105. Two days later I was back at the vet with a nasty leg wound (looked like an abscess) and the dog couldn't urinate. It apparently takes 24 to 48 hours for the effect of the venom to peak. The neuro toxin had gone to his bladder and the skin of his leg was dead and sloughing. He is now on prednisone, an antibiotic and medicine for bladder tone. I think he will be OK.
I wanted to share this in case anyone else has this happen to them. Go to the vet right away. Do not ice it because that keeps the venom in one place where it causes more damage.
Ughghgh - we've lived here 10 years and this is our first snake bite.

Jessi, is that the same snake that was in the rafters a week or so ago??? Was it a copperhead?? I wasnt sure you had them in your area. OMG....you need to be so carefull. That is one good thing about NH...no poisonous snakes. they say the timber rattlers are in the mountains here, but I guess there hasn't been a sighting in a long time.

OMG...you live in MD??? That is even more north than KY to me...I think! What is happening to the world that animals from warmer climates are heading north? crazy

LOL no way! I woulnt play with or kiss a copperhead! It was a huge mellow rat snake. She has a happy home under the grain shed at the riding stables now where she can eat all the mice! We do have copperheads, but mostly in the really wooded areas. The only thing I have seen by me is cottonmouths in our creek.
I'll keep an eye you! You too since they are all moving north!
