So I'm feeding everything this evening to save myself some time in the morning and my 6yr old son, says, "Mom! Look! A big snake is going to eat your chicken!!" Im looking all around, because we have some free range Serama, and they are small enough for most things to eat. Then I see where he is pointing...waaay up in our concrete building where the big birds roost!

Im thinking to myself..."uh..that one is a little bit big for you fella..."

I tried to stand on a bucket, and slide him down the wall with a rake, to let him out, but he swooped his head up and got a good grip and I didnt want to hurt him by yanking on his middle. I guess he is in the middle of the wall in the holes of the cinder blocks. I went to the other side of that wall, where we store hay, and saw his tail sticking out the other side. I got a stool and put it on top of the hay and grabbed his tail. His head came out near my hand and he was looking at me like I rang his doorbell, lol. I dont mind snakes, but really didnt want a big snake to fall on my face or chest while I was on a stool precariously on some haybales, so I let go.

I have a cochin that refused to go broody anywhere but the floor (trust me, we moved her many times!)

Im really worried that he might get down and eat my close-to- hatch eggs. I keep going out there to check. The first time, he was back up at the peak, sticking way out again toward the big chickens, and the next time I didnt see him.

Is there anything that I can use as a snake deterrent to spray around my cochin's nest box? Something they don't like the smell/taste of? Like perfume or lemon juice mixed with soap or something safe but yucky?

Thanks!!

HOLY COW!! In the first picture he looks HUGE.....and then he doesn't look AS BIG next to the BStar. Hopefully his belly is full from wild birds...not ours!

Because I am terrified and fascinated by snakes I have read a lot of posts about them and do remember reading that people said if they put mothballs around the coop that keeps them away. Then again, mothballs are pretty nasty things that could hurt your other critters.

By the way, I am amazed that you are so calm about it and so glad that I live where we only have small garter snakes.....and good luck with protecting the eggs/chicks!!!

Awww, I think hes cute. I have no idea how to get rid of him though. Good luck and good job on not wanting to hurt him...

HA! YEAH! I would love to steal James! Ian has always wanted a brother! (I told him he was outta luck, but he could have mine... so now he tells everyone that Josh is his Uncle and Brother. That just doesn't sound right even if you are not from KY..)

Dang! Photobucket is not working! I dont mind the snake, but tomorrow I'll post pics of what James can use the coal shovel on! He would be my Hero for LIFE!

They are fisher spiders and they pop up all over the place here...I wont go in the celler because of them. To give you the idea of size, think palm of your hand, size of a square tile, or once I trapped one in a mason jar (while standing on the toilet, squealing, and poking at it with a loooooong handled broom) and it filled the bottom with legs touching the sides.

Snakes, bats, rats, possums..whatever, I will wrestle it bare-handed Steve Irwin style..... Spiders--NO WAY!! We'll have to get Kelly on here to tell the "It's NOT a spider story"..lol
