what in the world? i was bleary-eyed this morning when i let them out and i noticed what i thought was an ugly mess of marigold colored runny poop. later i went back out and cleared off the droppings board and i was surprised to see that it really looks like the inside of an egg--there is runny yellow yolk-like part AND a part that is clear like the white of an egg. and it's right there with a little pile of normal poop, and there is NO sign of a shell there or on the shavings below the droppings board.

anyone experienced this? none of my hens are acting weird or sick...i vaguely remember something about an egg breaking iinside a hen and how that usually kills the hen. could this be what i'm dealing with? suggestions?

It's probably just a soft shelled or shelless egg. It could just be a glitch in the system, especially if your girls have just started laying or it could be indicitive of low calcium. I keep oyster shell out free choice for my girls so the ones that need more calcium then the layer feed provides can get it.

i have one EE that i don't seem to be getting eggs from yet, so it could be her. will research soft-shelled and shelless egg! thanks.
