Question, though... what is the stuff that is just barely attached to him? It is gray and white and tissue-like.And there was something in there, perfectly teardrop-like - any ideas?

Will post photo in a bit.

Well I'm late to the party but I have 2 hatches due tomorrow too, one under a broody and one in the bator that another broody abandoned. I'm waiting on White Orps, Light Sussex, Gold and Buff Brahmas and Cream Legbars. My last hatch didn't go terribly well so I am hoping for better results this time.

Well, that stuff is just hanging by a thread now, so I think it will fall off in a bit. He seems very energetic; chomping at the bit to get out of incubator already. His friend is not yet pipped, but I see the egg rocking sometimes, so hopefully he is going to show up (better late than never).

I was supposed to put some quail eggs in the 'bator tomorrow, but looks like I will not be able to, so I am going to make a Styrofoam one and put the quail in there.

That's his waste sac, the allantois, a connecting membrane that brings the chick oxygen and takes away waste. It serves the same function as a placenta in mammals.

I put my remaining 22 eggs in lockdown lat night. i candled them as I put them in to check the size of the air sac, and everything looks good. But I have learned not to count my chickens before they hatch, so to speak. I haven't noticed any rocking yet.
