I got a puppy for Christmas! Information and opinions needed

The dogs and cats at petco and petsmart are shelter dogs. Mixed breeds are some of the healthiest dogs. a very nice small dog is a rat terror

they adapt to you, if you are a couch potato so are they. if you are active, so are they. They are very social and love to go bye bye. as you can see we bore the heck out of them. lol

They do have to be on diet if they aren't very active though cause they tend to get overweight.
Good farm dogs. They were bred to hunt Rats (but I feed mine too well and had to get cats) they get along well with other animals. I have 2 ducks that free range and none of the dogs bother them at all.

(or a free pup off of craigslist...if they can't find homes for them where do you think they'll go?)

If you are looking for a particular breed...google "that breed" rescue. There are even Pug rescues...who could ditch a PUG!!!

I have only read about half the posts so far and i am going to respond before i forget something.

I said i checked petfinder. Please stop telling me to. I also checked searched for local shelters. I only have one left. I have someone coming that may help me find a shelter dog and i am going to an adoption day

First, I want to adopt but it hasn't been working out looking for a puppy.

I know about puppy mills and these have the breeder on them. It is a dog only store. I will check the breeder and look for breeders.

I have no breed preference. I have searched many breeds and i only really know from searching and experience what breeds i don't want

I currently have a lab and i would like a small-medium sized dog female( I already said that)

I love rat terriers and terriers in general
i do prefer mixes.

If you read my post i have a couple other questions.

I would love to save a life but i may not be able to. I can't drive and my mother doesn't want to go to far.

Check your vet's office. The vets in our area keep a bulletin board of dogs who need homes. You have to ask . The ads are in the back so the staff can screen prospects. Everybody is right about the pet store. It's a heartache waiting to happen. Maybe the pound? But do get the pup checked out before you bond with it. Hope you find the perfect puppy for your family.

If you want a purebred, go directly to the breeder. Don't believe what the petstores tell you.

I worked in a pet store thru high school. If someone asked where the puppies came from we were supposed to say "from a breeder out west" and that the owner of the store personally visited each breeder several times a year. It was all bullhookey.

We also always got unhappy customers because the puppies usually became pretty sick, probably because of all the inbreeding.

I'd never buy a dog from a pet store, ever. I'd rather go without then contribute to the cruelty of puppy mills.

I'm not big on crate training, but many are. It's entirely up to you.

But you're asking for suggestions without really telling us what your lifestyle is like and what you're expecting or hoping the dog to be like. Do you jog five miles a day and want the dog to go with you? Do you play World of Warcraft online ten hours a day and want the dog to lay on the couch with you?

That kind of information helps people make informed recommendations.

I went to this site and found a pitiful starved Rat Terrier here in Tn and I think I might be taking a small road trip. I can offer him a good home, love and food.

he is so skinny. bad people I can't believe what people do to each other and helpless animals.

Crate training worked for me. I leave the cage open and they all use it like a dog house. I tell them to go to bed and they run and jump in their cage. I get the vacuum out and they get in and won't come out til I am done. lol so far they never offered to help.

here's the Hearts United for animals sanctuary - they do travelling caravans to get dogs to you and have many puppys especially from breeding mills that let them go or are shutting down

I bet you find a wonderful puppy here - don't hesitate to call them, they're wonderful to deal with.

Good luck - I have four dogs and can't imagine my life without them.

I'm trying to remember what web site it is....but they have a dog breed calculator. You fill in the questions regarding your lifestyle and the calculator tells you which breeds would best suit you.
I wish I could find it for you. It might be on the purina website. The website is advertised at West Minster....maybe someone on here knows where it is.
Rat terriers are good all around dogs. I have had them for many years. They come in different sizes from toys to decker giants.
I'm not sure where you live. If it's in or near North Eastern, Ohio. I might be able to help you out. I have 2 young male rat terriers here that need good homes. They came back to me because their owner had to move and couldn't keep them. So I am placing them into good homes for free.
