I got an eggzilla today!

One of my aunt's chickens once randomly screamed very loudly and we all ran into the coop to see what was wrong. The poor girl was squatting and looked in pain. We looked under her and found a ginormous egg. We cracked it open and found a whole other egg in it, shell and all. Though is was a bit smaller than a normal-sized egg.
Still it's just... scary. Imagine if the eggs were incubated. Poor chicks.
Holy Mackeral! I've heard of that happening. I just didn't expect this so soon, since they've only been laying for several weeks now.

It's actually more common with new layers as their 'system' comes 'online'.
More common and frequent with high production breeds.

There’s a lovely poster of a spiral of eggs arranged by color from white all the way out to the dark chocolate (from French Morans, I think). I got one from McMurrys Hatchery and put it up in the coop for the girls’ motivation. Actually, it helped me know who‘s laying when, as each breed has their own general color. A full color picture is in their print catalogue, as well. It might help you know who needs the KY jelly.

Bahaha. Thanks. I did download several different charts. I Kind of know who is laying which ones, as I did film them one day last week. I don't have any wall space except for bottom half of the nesting boxes. Do you think they'd get the hint?;)

Well. They are smart. Smarter than I ever suspected before we got chickens. Don’t you just love them? I feel very lucky to be able to keep them pretty much as dear pets.

an interesting aside, I’ve seen that when they skip a day the next day’s egg is often noticeably larger. Makes sense.

Yeah, I was wondering if that was the case. The first time they skipped a day I found 5 the next day. Then yesterday I figured because they missed the day before, it would make up for that missing egg. Boy did it! haha Someone posted (somewhere) that after they gave their chickens some outdated yogurt their chickens laid a lot more eggs.
