There is really no point in giving them water. If you're trying to supplement them, use cow's milk.

Two words...Baby Monitor.

I ignored everyone for years who suggested I get one, but wow, a what a difference it made. Now I just get up at 3 am and listen for pushing or baby kid sounds, instead of slogging down to the barn 10 times a night.

I have a saanen cross now, purely by accident. Her mama died having her and the owner brought her to me to see if I could save her. She's a love.
Looks funny in my colored herd, though. We call her Casper.

Awwww Kritter, casper is a good name! Glad your available to help out. We did that with a calf for our neighbor last month but she got scours and pneumonia and we lost her

It was rough on the kid, the neighbor told her if she lived DD could have her. Apparently we are now on the quest to find a Jersey, LOL, what'll she come up with next?
As for the water for the kids, i've always done that. They need water just as much as mama's milk, so i figure why not start them out early, and if i need to give meds or supplement milk, they already know how to use the bottle.
Ohh, funny thing, i started them on buckets last night, or tried to. One kid kept climbing right in while the other 4 were trying to drink..and the bucket is only a one gallon little easter bucket. I wish i'd had a camera to get that one. Everyone had their heads stuffed in the little yellow pail decorated with eggs and bunnys, and here this little girl just jumps right in
