I got quail, do you have quail?

This will be my second hatch. My first eggs came from birds I bought locally. I started with tibetan, rosetta tux, english whites, browns, and italians. I am very excited for this new hatch because they are roux dilutes and red/red tuxedos from quaillady (adding some more color). My birds are not separated in duos or trios, so with my own eggs, I will never know what colors I will get. I like it this way though. Someday I might separate them in pairs. Only time will tell.

Birdboy82- It's a great start! Years ago...I only started with 6 Pharaoh colored ones...heck, you already got 3 types going! Post some pics sometime

Marty- I normally wait until day 21 to turn my incubator off...sometimes with even slight variations it can throw a whole hatch off by a day or two.

Eyeheartquail- day 4, but it's still pretty exciting! Anytime you have fuzzies in the oven is a good thing...be sure to keep us updated throughout you process.

Sounds like you have lots of neat colors..and are getting ready for some more! Post some pics of your birds and examples of all the different colors...I like the tons of different colors too.

My pens are set up more or less purest pens, my tuxes run in their same color groups, (ie tibetan tux are all kept with the tibetan or dark range, red range and red range tux are together, etc..pharoahs with the golds to minimize the fatal gene and such)...but before I had the set up I do now, all my colors ran together too. It was exciting on hatch days to see what colors would display. Even now in the brooders...I keep all the colors together...and occasionally they will start laying before I can get them sold, so it's still a big surprise what is going to come out.

Speaking of more color, I keep telling myself I am going to head up to Canada, only around 6 hours away and smuggle some silvers out.

With my luck, I would get caught at border control. Think I could hide them in my pants? Bahaha.

My smallest child has decided she wants button quail. Anyone able to personally reccomend a source for eggs? I kinda like the tuxedo ones, but the only quail I've ever kept is coturnix.

Any thoughts??

You do need a permit to raise them...Oklahoma requires a permit for any North American Native Bird. If you are only planning on raising for your own uses, the permit is $10. If you are planning on selling, the permit is $48. These are annual permits that expire June 30th of each year.

http://wildlifedepartment.com/license/other.htm go under the link for Wildlife breeder applications. Call your county's game warden to come out to do your inspection, then you can mail or go to the Dept of Wildlife in OKC to turn in your complete application.

i may be getting a group of 5 coturnix quail soon. 1 male and 4 females.
i have rabbits and goats and am hoping to get a good sized flock going of quail for meat and eggs.
i got alot, like 44 alot, of those wire squares that people use for organizing at a flea market. i saw things about them being used for rabbit and g.pig cages. such as: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=c+&+c+cages&qpvt=c+&+c+cages&FORM=Z7FD and i thought they would be good for parts of quail cages. i'm going to use the squares and ziptie them together for the sides and dividers between cage sections. and use 1/2 inch by 1 inch welded wire for the floor and 1 by 1 inch welded wire for the top.
once i get the zipties (or cable ties or whatever you want to call them) then i think the cage set up i will be making will be sort of like this:
1/2 by 1 inch welded wire floor. 10ft by 3ft and 1ft tall. the sides will be the square organizer things and so will the dividers. the 10x3x1 cage will be divided into 5 sections that will each be 2x3ft. each section will have a lift up door on the top of the cage for easy access to each section. this cage will be capable of holding 30 quail. 25 females and 5 males. the cages will be hung from the ceiling and will be on a slant forward so that the eggs will roll to the front.

i'm still toying with several ideas for feeders and waterers.
any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

New to quail. Just ordered jumbo cot eggs for the incubator. Awaiting their arrival this week. I've raised one batch of pheasants from eggs and lots of chickens but this will be a first for me. As I am 5 years from retirement, goal is for smaller scale meat and egg source in the future.

I think you'll be pleased with the ease of the corturnix, and the lovely little eggs. They are a delite. Do you have several small cages? We actually have all sorts of cages found at private sales and auctions. I just buy smaller wire to put over the bottem for them, and offer 12 x 12 pieces or cardboard on the floor for foot rest areas, and after age 7 week, I put in little quail egg boxes.
