I got quail, do you have quail?

I'm just starting out with Quail... Coturnix. And I have a LOT to learn!
Hatching them was a new experience... way different from the 93843964 keets that I have hatched, lol.

I have 3 that are just now 30 days old:
(The Gold is my fav out of the 3)

(Not sure if this is a battle scar on this one's head inflicted by the Gold male, or if it's a self inflicted cage roof wound)

So far only the Gold is crowing...

And then I have these 6 little guys that are only 8 days old. (The Tux and the Autumn Amber are my favs in this batch):

Hello Everyone
I am just starting with my first guineas, and am having a ball! My husband and I would like to raise some qauil, but know
Nothing about them really. We like them for meat and eggs and to just have around. Could someone suggest which ones would be good for
beginners. We live in NM I dont know if that matters. Also what is the difference between the wild ones that run around with the little flipper
looking feather on top thier heads and the oned zi see pictured?

In NM you have blue scale quail and Gambel's quail that I know of. the ones you mentioned with the little feathers on it head, are Gambel's...Both are new world quail and very flighty. Read spastic! Neither would be a good choice for your first quail IMHO. If I were you, and had your stated goals in mind, I would look at coturnix. They are old world quail and very friendly if raised around folks and handled. They breed easy and are very prolific. They almost never hatch there own eggs so a incubator will be a must. But thats the best part, trust me on this!!! Do some research and be careful to get good stock. They are not all the same. Birds that are feather sexable are much easier for beginners too. Good Luck and if you have questions, just ask.... Bill

Thank you so much, I have gotten my new chicken flock started and my guineas, and would love to have quail but want to start with something easy as I have my handsful as it is.
I see you have black copper marans. That is what I want to add next to my chickens.
What are the quails lifespan like? So if I cant eat them, they would be good as ornamental friends?

IMHO, coturnix are meat birds. They will live around 5 years or so if all is right. They are lovable little spuds but they are messy. they mature to butcher age age in 8 weeks and often lay eggs in 5 weeks. I feel if you raise coturnix quail, eating or selling them on Craig's List would need to be a option. If you hatch say 24 birds, roughly half are gonna be roos. Thats gonna be alot of crow'n at around 5 weeks of age. These are the ones I eat first! The extra crow'n roos and the mean ones just seem to taste better too!! Once you get your feet wet with hatch'n and raise'n coturnix. you can sell them off if you cant bring yourself to butcher them. Then raise some slower growing, prettier new worlds with the same equipment... maybe even think about a few chukar.....

would like to buy grint quaill,at about 7 weeks old ,if you got or know someone close to okla. please let me know ok thanksa, jerry

hi all, im from Sydney Australia, i bought 4 jap quail for my dad to keep him busy, he is almost 80, i enjoy watching them. i had to have my own, so i went out and bought another 6 for myself, 2 males and 4 females, they are are great bird! never get bored of watching them. now my 14 yr old son whats to get involed with the hatching process.

i have some questions, is it easy to incubator eggs? automatic egg turner or Manuel? some information or suggestion would be awesome.

when do i expect eggs to be fertile?

got one egg today, had them for a week now,

how long can you keep a egg before you put in incubator?

what are the most reasonable incubators to buy?

thank you in advanced!!!!!!!!!!!!

go the quail!!!!!!!!!!

cheers SAM

Unless u have lots of time on your hands i would go with an automatic turner... usually the eggs are fertile right away... most ppl wait a few weeks before setting them so they will reach full size... after 5 to 7 days the hatchablity of an egg goes down rapidly so that by 2 weeks very few will hatch... i have no idea what would be a good incubator to buy Down Under... any that will work for chickens will work for Quail and most u can buy with the turners made for quail...
