I got some meat rabbits!

My "uncle" had a hobby farm of rabbits, pigeons, pheasants, milk goats, and horses. He went to the fair with most of the animals and he loved his rabbits - his set-up was double stacked pens with solid plywood backs and wire for the rest; wooden roofs with 2' overhang, and located under the trees for shade. He had holland lop, dutch and one other type I can't remember the name of but it was huge. So I know they can take the winters around here, but I don't think my hubby would tolerate having the buns outside though. He is barely tolerating of the IDEA of getting rabbits.

Do you go for just the largest size, or do you take into account how fast they get to that size?
Do you use the hide? I have looked at some DIY tanning sites and was thinking about coming up with a use for the hides.

I keep the cubby kits the ones that has a nice body structure and the friendliest . they never bite but their is always one or two that steals your heart so I keep those ones. As for the hides this year I am going to tan them and make blankets and stuff I love to sew . it should be easy to make some nice things with them . I am sure the kids would like a pillow pocketbook or something from them. Would be nice gifts too. Tanning sounds easy enough. Last year in one week I had 25 nice colorful hides and they went to waste. I had blacks grays white and spotted ones It would of been a nice blanket. I am kicking myself now. So I am Getting serious this year no procrastinating.

I use to have a mink farm years ago and that was a lot of stink and hard work gave that up in the 90's made good money then but now its not worth the price of it . I like the rabbits better . cleaner and friendlier . Mink would bite your finger right off if you made one mistake handling them. When they had babies you had to be nearby because their sacks were so tough at times you had to cut it to get the babies out and they were meaner yet. It was a all day job you only had a few hrs. of sleep a day.
So compare to the mink tell your hubby rabbits are fun and easy to deal with.

We raise meat rabbits. I have a trio of Champagnes, a pair of Silver Foxes, and some meat mutts. This compliments the chickens and ducks well! Silver Foxes are awesome mothers! I have 4 babies out of the nest box now and they are so cute! I also want to get some small pigs or mini cows but that will be much later.... I love my animals and they all serve a purpose.

Yep, I was asking you. And thanks for responding! I am looking for some purebred stock. Do you have any rabbit friends nearer to Youngwood? My daughter is coming to visit soon and could provide transportation.

in Middelburg Pa there is a rabbit breeder Look up Waltz's Flemish Hoppers they have nice stuff hers is all purebred no sure of the mileage from there but it is going toward Lewistown if that rings a bell for you I bought my Champaign from there and her prices are not that bad for a breeder. She has some pretty big rabbits too.
