Hi,

My name is Kristy - My fiance and I just bought a 7 acre mini farm around Marietta OH. We are very excited to start working with chickens, ducks, pigs, the whole nine yard. We are working on hammering out the details on the coop and plan to have jersey giants as our main chicken.

Any one from that area?

Welcome - I'm in Medina, OH. You will love the farm life! So I just got 3 new Black Jersey Giant chicks (sexed as females) from Meyers Hatchery in Polk, OH. I love their birds. They are fabulous birds. Very interactive. In fact, my grown Jersey went broody last July and hatched 3 beautiful chicks out of 7 possibles. She was a great Mom. Never left the nest during incubation. I separated her from the rest of the flock with her eggs so she could relax. I went in several times a day and actual hand fed and watered her because she would not move off that nest. Once they hatched, she took care of them for weeks and we introduced her and the chicks to the rest of the flock during free range. She protected her chicks from the rest of the flock and when we were comfortable we combined the flock, no issues.

Unfortunately, my Jersey mom was killed by a predator a few weeks ago, broke my heart, she was my favorite. She is my only bird killed in over 2 years of free ranging. Thought you might enjoy a pic of her and her chick. Actually is my facebook profile pic still:)..
