to thank the person who posted the link to small animal euthanasia. It worked flawlessly and the poor chick just drifted off. I can't remember who posted it, but I bookmarked it (just in case)- I just want to thank the poster.

could you please give us the link? i've got some eggs due to hatch on the 31st. then i'm gonna hatch some silkie eggs in april. so i'd like to have all the info ready just in case. but hopefully i won't have to use it.

I had to euthanize my 10 month old pullet tonight

but gratefully, had read on another post here about using dry ice. It worked exactly like they said- she just drifted off into chicken heaven.
I set it up ahead of time by using a rubbermaid type container with a wire basket along the bottom for separation over the dry ice- then put fresh hay down on top of the basket. I waited until she put herself up to roost- then gently picked her up off the roost (she was already mellow and ready to sleep) and set her into her new hay "bed" where she immediately snuggled in- I put the lid on and never heard another noise- not a peep- nothing- she just went to sleep. I peeked in on her about 20 minutes later and she looked like she was asleep in the hay.
It's never a pleasant experience to lose an animal, but this was so humane, it made me feel almost good about it because I know she won't be suffering anymore. There was absolutely no stress - on her or on me- I'm very grateful to whoever posted it, but I'm still sad, but gratefully sad

We followed these directions. We actually used two gallon zip lock bags- I put a third smaller zip lock bag full of warm water in the bottom of the gallon size we put the chick in and covered that with the damp washcloth it was already on (it is hard to describe, sorry).. The poor little chick was badly deformed- its intestines (not just the yolk sac) and the bulk of its innards were outside its body. We waited two days to see if it would improve, but it got worse. We felt so bad for it. I think it was pretty close to death as it was-it did just drift off- no struggling, or anything (very fast).
The rest of the hatch did very well, so I guess it was something with that particular chick. I did read through it and bookmarked just in case before I hatched anything. But I've hatched overe 100 birds now, and this is the first time I've had to use it.
