It's funny, here in BC you often have to give some sort of personal info no matter where you shop. I have to give address and phone number just to buy chicken feed. They told me it's in case the food is ever recalled, they'll need to be able to contact me to let me know.
I also had to give personal info when I ordered my new chicks a couple weeks ago through the hatchery agent. They don't sell chicks in feed stores here, in fact to purchase any kind of animal or pet requires a form and personal info.
I'm very used to it, but I can understand how it can make a person feel overly regulated and nervous, especially if it's something that's never been done before.
I do remember it being different when I was a kid though. At the pet store there was a bin with kittens for $5 dollars each. Now kittens are $140 dollars minimum, and the adoption forms are three pages long. I understand it's to prevent cruelty, but sometimes they can make a person feel like a criminal.
I was actually delighted when I only had to give my number and address to order the chicks. I was partially expecting the same big interrogation that applies with other animals.
Do you own your home?
How big is your yard?
May we contact your landlord?
What is your purpose for adopting this pet?
Will you provide vet care?
Tell us what you think it will cost to care for this animal.
Will you ever give the animal up, and for what reason would you?
Etc., etc., etc.......
