I had a Speckled Sussex chicken hatch out my lone little peachick. I understand that it's a risk leaving the peachick in with mama chicken, but... I don't have any other chicks to put it with so it would be lonely and that chicken sat on those eggs the whole time. She was barely eating and drinking. So after that kind of dedication, I figured that she deserved the chance to raise the baby and baby won't be all alone.
That being said, baby pea is now almost 2 weeks old. I rigged them a small moveable pen with shelter on one end and open on the other. We got a sprinkling of rain early this morning (nothing measurable) and the grass was damp. First I looked and mama was out in the pen. Her feathers moved a little and she suddenly sprouted a little head from her breast feathers and it was looking around. It was just too cute! A little later, I looked and baby was standing on mama's back. Then mama started walking, baby almost fell off but caught itself was was riding around on her back. I just had to laugh!
I sent a friend a picture of the baby and she thought that it was... a gosling.
