Depends where you live, keeping water from freezing in winter and cracking bottles. Thought of trying that here but was worried about winter.

Prolonged freezing and / or freezing and thawing makes the plastic brittle.

This is a great idea. I may just give it a try. It does freeze here, so will have to monitor it and be prepared for dripping. Thanks for sharing!

Or you could use a glass jar if you leave room for expansion.

They took a soda bottle and attached to a hole in the roof. The water refracts the light, spreading it around inside the room. They used to do something along the same lines on old ships using a glass prism.
