So I was out of town for a day, and stupid hen (that is her name, poor thing really isn't all there in the head) got out.

Apparently the new neighbors let their dogs run free every evening at 7...they did not kill her, but possibly hurt her wing, she is limping and holds her wing out (maybe this is to stay balanced) I have her in a separate cage and she eats and drinks ok, but this is day one, and I have not noticed a lot of poop. Will she heal? She is my favorite and I don't want to lose her, I'll even keep her around if she is unable to lay eggs.

as for the dogs.....if they get in my yard again, I'll shoot them...please no moral lessons here....

So sorry about your girl. Maybe give her some electrolytes to help her get over the shock of the attack??? Do you see any broken skin, etc? Can you examine her legs/feet to see if there is a break?

Again, I'm so sorry. Unfortunately we can't always be around to stop them from endangering themselves. Let me know what you find. I'm hoping for her

Keep her quiet and draft free/warm(not with a heat light, just room temp is fine) and give her a little extra love and she should be ok unless something is broken. I had one traumatized like that, and that is what I did. Her wing was hanging on the floor. I think it was a soft tissue injury and she has healed up really well. She is back with the rest of the girls now, but I really do miss her being in the house with me. I am thinking positive thoughts for your girl to make a full recovery!!!

Poor chick:( I hope she makes it.

Not sure where you are located at but in my state/county.. you can shoot any animal that chases or hurts your lifestock.I will not tolerate any stray animal on my property or chasing my lifestock.

Period!

Hey guys thanks for all the replies. She is on my back porch in a dog cage and she has been eating and drinking fine. She even laid an egg yesterday morning. She did not roost the first night, but the second night she did. She still walks with a limp and doesn't want to move too much, but my 16 month old has been keeping her company. Hopefully she'll be back in no time.

Now I am sad for the other chickens, they are cooped up in their run and unable to free range thanks to those dogs. GRR We are in NC, BTW, but in my city, no shooting of firearms.....

i hate to bridge the topic...but...it's time for a talk with the neighbors about "free ranging" their dogs.

(uh oh...this is where the 15 page thread starts...!!!)

If you are in city limits (I'm guessing because the no firearms) then you probably have a leash law or something to that effect. Even out of city limits we have a county law here that states you must have control of your dog at all times either fenced/leashed in your yard or leashed off of your property.

They already killed a rooster I had about 6 months ago by coming in my yard. She paid me $20 dollars but still, keep the flippin things out. I am seriously contemplating buckets of antifreeze around my property, just in case the come in my yard......part of me feels bad, but I can't be responsible for what they get into in my yard....
